Something Rather New

(July 2015)

Today I took a bike ride

Down to my favourite road

Like I so often do

But today I did something

Something rather new

Instead of continuing around the block

To complete a perfect square

Like I so often do

I turned around to come back

Something rather new

I never realized a certain detail

That I travel with the wind

Going the way I so often do

Turning around I went against it

Something rather new

I was surprised, and surprised of that

For its something quite obvious

But going the way I so often do

I just had never experienced

Something rather new

The wind pushed against me

As I attempted to continue to go

The way I so often do

And I realized that I would have to try

Something rather new

I had to downshift my gears

And bike so much slower

Than the way I so often do

And it felt wrong to change into

Something rather new

But as I struggled to bike

A path so familiar to me

Differently than the way I so often do

I realized I was seeing

Something rather new

Rushing with so much speed

Past the landmarks along the road

Like I so often do

I never really saw anything or

Something rather new

When I finally finished fighting

The urge to bike with speed

Like I so often do

And settled into a new rhythm I saw

Something rather new

I noticed the trees, the birds

The flowers throughout the grass

Like I so often do

And yet, they were

Something rather new

I appreciated them more

As they waved to me

Unlike I so often do

They were absolutely beautiful

Something rather new

Since my speed was so slow

I thought I’d take forever to get home

Compared to the time I so often do

But I was so caught up in seeing

Something rather new

That I was back before I realized

And as I dismounted my bike

Like I so often do

That’s it’s good to try

Something rather new

As I biked along, thinking thoughts

That formed themselves into poetry

Like they do often do

Today they formed a certain poem

Something rather new

That I was excited to write

But when I began to record the words

Like I so often do

They changed into something different

Something rather new

You cannot control what happens

And make it resemble the things

That you so often do

So do not be afraid of

Something rather new
