River of Speech

(August 2015)

Our conversation begins

as a young stream,

our voices small but

rushing forward quickly,

skipping over rocks in

energetic haste, as we

ignore those awkward hurdles

that might block us.

We carve our way forwards

as we direct all our energy

into the single, straight goal

of getting to know you.

As time progresses

our conversation slows,

bubbling energy replaced

with a calm persistence.

Our conversation broadens

and meanders.

We have carved our space,

one not easily tampered with

and others cannot redirect us.

Instead, they must build over us

if we bother them.
